Green Sprouts recalls sippy cups made of stainless steel for lead risk

Green Sprouts is a North Carolina company that focuses on natural parenting. They have recalled three products. One was a stainless-steel sippy cup and one had a straw. According to the recall notice the base of the cups or bottles could break off, exposing a lead-containing solder dot.

According to the notice, the cups and bottles were sold at Whole Foods and Buy Buy Baby stores, as well as online at Amazon and Bed, Bath and Beyond.

Seven reports have been submitted about the bottles’ bases separating, revealing the solder dots. On Wednesday, the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission and Green Sprouts jointly issued the recall.

If ingested, lead can be toxic and cause long-term health problems. There have been no reports of injuries due to the cups and bottles.

You should immediately throw out any bottles that have been recalled if you purchased one.

Green Sprouts released a statement on their website stating that third-party labs that they use to test solder dots did not test it because it was “inaccessible under normal usage.” The solder dot containing lead creates a vacuum barrier between the products’ external and internal steel layers.

“Had they known that these products could contain lead, we wouldn’t have made them available,” stated the company.

Green Sprouts has stated that they will no longer use soldering lead in any of its products.
